What is DevOps Anyway?
This is a great blog on the topic of DevOps - Patrick Debois is discussing how teams bridge the gap between projects and operations. Especially, this entry on What is This Devops Thing, Anyway?.
In this entry he outlines the common problems confronted by development and operations teams as they collectively work to deploy and release web applications:
1. Fear of Change
2. Risk Deployments
3. It works on my machine!
4. Siloisation
I know we have all seen these problems and the negative effects they can have on large IT organizations. Especially, as they try to deliver more changes to production applications in less time. Building DevOps capabilities is critical to delivering on business expectations. Patrick Debois advocates that developers and sysadmins can become "Devops" - meaning building cross-functional skills - Developers learning about the infrastructure - and Sysadmins learning their way around the code base. I couldn't agree more.
